Goodbye 2006

What a year and it has really flown by.
Now as the year comes to an end I'm planning a much quieter year in 2007. But we'll see what the future holds.
Hard to believe I'll be 43, I still feel like I'm 18....until I look in the mirror LOL.
My babies are not babies anymore and they are all taller than me.
No great New Year's resolutions. Just to enjoy life every single day, thankful for what we have.
I really want our boys to live life to the full and I look for little quotes to put up for them to read and maybe absorb - you just never know with males :)
The 2 on the pantry at the moment - on the pantry since food is a constant in their minds - are:

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, drink in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "Woo Hoo, what a ride!" - I saw this with a little variation on a cross stitch chart and loved it.

The second one I've always loved:

Work like you don't need money
Love like you've never been hurt
Dance like nobody's watching
Sing like nobody's listening
Be surprised like you were born yesterday
Tell the truth and you don't have to remember anything
Live like it's Heaven on Earth

There are another couple I need to hunt down. One talks about the dash between the date of birth and date of death, the dates not being important but what you do in the dash. The other is something about wishing you enough.

We really are lucky with our sons, despite a few health problems and challenges, they truly are good kids, becoming good men. That is what John and I set out to do - raise good men. So far so good as long as we survive their teenage years LOL.

So today the last day of the year I plan to get the house under control, make a coconut cream pie for dessert tonight, then relax with some stitching. I have 3 projects to finish for others, so that is my first goal for 2007, then I plan to stitch for fun. This afternoon one of my brother's and his wife will be visiting and this evening we drop Simon off at a party, then ring the New Year in waiting to go and pick him up - the joys of parenting teens LOL.

Happy New Year - 2007

Christmas 2006

We had a lovely Christmas.
On Christmas Eve, John's parents arrived to spend the evening with us, a first for them and a new tradition by the end of the evening. We had our usual Christmas Eve party - too much food, but left overs are always a good thing.
After dinner, buffet style, we exchanged gifts. John and I each got a box of chocolates from his parents. Bradley got dark chocolate and the new Guiness Book of World Records, Justin a book and chocolate, Simon a CD and chocolate, Shane 6 bags of marbles (don't ask - he collects them and now has over 2000!!) and chocolate.
We gave John's dad a gift certificate to a hardware store - boring but that is what he asks everyone for every year and it keeps him happy. We give John's mum a big felt stocking full of goodies every year, everything from clothes pegs and hand wash through to a gift certificate for a local department store. Everything is wrapped so it takes her ages to open everything, always good fun.
The boys, John and I exchange our $5 gift challenge gifts too. This year I got Simon's name, I gave him a Money Tree that holds $1 coins and a balloon animal kit. Simon had Shane's name and gave him marbles and a sticker that says "I'm Not Weird, I'm Gifted." Shane had Bradley's name and gave him a sketch pad, new pencils and a fine marker, as Bradley loves sketching. Bradley had John's name and gave him a book. John had Justin's name and gave him a coffee mug, a book light and 2 lollipops. Justin had my name and gave me a computer game - 101 Blockbuster Games.
Shane also bought gifts for his grandparents, he gave Nanna fudge and Grandpa a hammer and nails. Simon gave Nanna chocolates and Grandpa shortbread biscuits.
Justin gave me a box of chocolates - note a theme here LOL, I will never lose weight! and he gave John a drink holder. Simon gave John a Stephen King book and he gave me a basket filled with goodies - chocolate, a coffee mug, a tin of biscuits, a ham bag, pens and a set of needles and a needle threader.
We finished off the evening with pie and coffee, Banana Cream Pie that my MIL made, and Chocolate Cream Pie that I made.
A great night and a new tradition.

Christmas morning John and I were awake before the boys. This is becoming the norm LOL. So we had breakfast while we waited for them. Simon and Shane were up first and had breakfast before opening their stockings. Then I let them wake the other boys. When we all finished our stockings John handed out the gifts from under the tree. I'll share photos later :)
The first present the boys opened was a new winter jacket, all were really impressed - I was expecting a few puzzled looks since it is summer, but they were all really pleased. Other memorable gifts - Shane's shoe box filled with socks, he cracked up in hysterics as he had put socks right at the top of his wish list LOL. The plastic storage boxes filled with their favourite snacks were a big hit, John handed them all out at the same time so they all opened them together. Oh and Bradley's favourite was a big Pikachu soft toy, we got a good photo of him with it, he loves Pokemon.
I was suitably spoilt, a couple of cds, "Michael" on dvd, more chocolate!!, girlie stuff - scented soaps and body mists, more pigs for my collection and a new diary.
John loved his books, dvds and cds.
We had a really lovely relaxed dinner and a lazy family day, it was really a great Christmas and there isn't much clean up left to do today. With no shops open and nothing to do we plan a quiet day at home today, relaxing.
Tomorrow we brave the traffic to go to the hospital and back to reality, but for now we are just enjoying each others company.

Merry Christmas Eve

Well apart from cleaning up ready for my in laws arrival this afternoon I am ready. Salads are made, just have to whip the cream for the chocolate cream pie and heat up the savoury pastries.

We had a wonderful start to the holiday on Christmas Eve Eve (John's favourite day, since he loves the build up to Christmas). The friend who introduced us way back in 1980 dropped in on his way home from work. Phil the fireman, he is such a great guy and we enjoyed a quiet drink and a lot of laughs. John and I are still laughing this morning!

So we are ready to tackle Christmas and have some fun.

Simon is working until 6pm, so he'll be tired by the time he gets home, but once he is here we'll have our traditional Christmas Eve party.

I have no idea what gifts have been smuggled in the house for me this year, so I am really looking forward to getting spoilt in the morning LOL.

Merry Christmas friends, I'll post again after the big day.

Have to shake this feeling

and brighten up before Christmas Eve.
John's creatinine has risen again, from 135 to 147. The last time this happened mid-November was the start of the really bad couple of weeks, biopsies, changing medications and stress. John says not to worry, but I can't shake this down feeling.
Logically I know if his specialist was really concerned he would want to see John again sooner than Friday the 29th. But logic and emotion don't often go together.

To top a down day off, my mum rang to find out how old one of my uncles is. Uncle Donny is 65 and has been given 6 months to live as he has pancreatic cancer. Being the keeper of the family history mum had to call me as dad can't remember how old any of his own children are let alone his brothers. It is just so sad to think of Uncle Donny knowing there is nothing anyone can do. Dad is sad as he hasn't seen his family for 42 years and needs to say goodbye to his little brother from such a distance.

But I know I have to shake this feeling and as John said have a really good Christmas with the boys.

Picking up the Christmas ham and starting my Christmas baking will help.

3 Down, hopefully not 3 to go!!

I was hoping for a quiet, relaxed Wednesday, but it was not to be.
What we thought was heat exhaustion with Simon on Sunday night, turned out to be a stomach bug that he shared with his brothers!!
I know it is the time for giving, but I would rather he hadn't given this away LOL.
Sunday night was spent looking after Simon, at least he made it to the bathroom.
Yesterday morning Justin woke early vomiting and didn't even get out of his bedroom. So I spent the morning washing, carpet, bedding, clothes, books. What a mess.
Then I was sitting on the couch talking on the phone late afternoon and Shane didn't even make it off the couch! Yuck. So the rest of the afternoon was spent washing - couch cushion covers, clothes, carpet, the coffee table, everything in close proximity to where he was sitting.
The boys have decided that they really do appreciate me, LOL who else would clean up after them. They have also decided that I am immune, and I am hoping they are right.
We sent Bradley to bed with a bucket last night, just in case.
Fingers crossed if anyone else gets it we'll all be better before Christmas Day.

Not a Happy Hopper!!

Well, I went to the GP yesterday and have been referred to the orthopaedic surgeon for assessment and management of my tenosynovitis, or very sore ankle LOL. But, the first available appointment is February 1st. I know the time will fly by, but I am not happy as the GP made no other suggestion as to what to do in the meantime, even when I said "so I guess I'll just hop for 6 weeks."
By the time I see the surgeon it will have been a full year, 6 appointments with the GP, x-rays, scans and an ultrasound - definitely a well studied ankle.
So I still don't know if I need surgery, I am hoping not. For now I'll keep strapping, icing and resting my foot and we'll see what February brings.
I'm kicking myself because had we gone to the over burdened hospital emergency room when all this started I probably would have been given a nice splint to immobilise the joint and give it the complete rest it needs.
Not to worry at least this way I get to see a surgeon we know and trust.

I'm actually home all day today!! Have the usual housework but not too much.
Simon needs to clear a space in his bedroom as Paul is coming to sleep over on Thursday.

We'll be off to the hospital on Thursday morning and before we know it Christmas Day will dawn.

Headless Photos Anyone?

ROFLOL, so funny. I ordered copies of 3 photos taken at last season's Little Athletics presentation day. The vice president of the club gave them to me today and couldn't understand why I wanted them re-done....the boys heads were cut off!!!!
When I showed her she said "That's what they would have looked like in the book." We had been given a proof book to look through to select the ones we wanted.
Of course my reaction was "Why would I order photos of my kids without their heads?" So she went and found the proof book and sure enough in the proof shots the boys had heads, amazing.
So , she said she will get them reprinted, "lucky she knows the bloke."
I know my boys are tall, but really if the printing is so hard at least cut off their feet not their heads!!

Hey Hey It's Saturday

So, just for a change (LOL) I am off to athletics with the boys. Luckily it is cooler and it will only be a short program as it is the Christmas break up. No athletics until mid-January. You know I love it so, ROFLOL.

Amazingly the lounge stayed tidy last night. Maybe these teenage boys are finally listening. No boy junk to collect this morning.

Tomorrow we are visiting my parents for a bbq lunch. Our Christmas visit with them. Hoping for nice weather so we can sit outside.

Monday my oldest sister is coming here for a visit and coffee, she is an early riser, so I must make sure I am up and dressed before the door bell rings, likely to be before 7am.

Christmas shopping is almost done, I thought I was done, then John reminded me that we didn't buy the boys the traditional box of chocolates each. Luckily I can pick them up at the local grocery store as the rest of the shopping centres are madness.

On a really good note, the 16th birthday party that Simon was meant to go to on Tuesday night has been cancelled. Hooray!! We weren't too happy about the idea of him being out in a rough neighbourhood till midnight. Seems the parents thought better of the idea and cancelled. There are so many problems with gate crashers at teenage parties now we were concerned, with 50 guests expected it could easily have escalated. Knowing we can't be over protective we were going to let Simon go, with strict instructions to phone us at any sign of trouble, but now big sigh of relief no party!!

Still limping along, waiting to see the doctor on Tuesday morning :)

It's raining!!

It is actually raining and has cooled down. Not enough rain to break the drought or water restrictions, but at least everything is not dry and dusty.

Lazy day today, did the usual housework and washing. Only stitched about 10 stitches.

Just got back from dropping Simon off at a cafe for dinner with friends, the worst part we have to pick him up again at 9pm. We are getting too old for this LOL. The joy of teenagers.

All is going well with John and he heads back to his specialist in a week, so nice to have the whole week off from hospital visits. His numbers are trickling down slowly, now at 135. Not the ideal 120, but the doctor is happy enough and John feels well.

A bit of sad family news, John's oldest cousin died yesterday, he was 52. Terrible for his poor Mum who is not a well lady herself at 75. No matter what age the death of your child must be the hardest to bear.

Tuesday morning...cool and quiet

Woke up to a lovely cool morning, hooray!! Bonus - all the men in my life are sound asleep, peace and quiet for me.
Thankfully the spider bite turned out to be nothing, obviously just an angry spider not a toxic one. The funny thing is the first reaction is to squash the spider, which makes it very hard to identify if it was indeed poisonous. But even the little bite mark is gone, so I know I'm safe.
Not much planned today, the usual dreaded housework.
We need to pick the lawn mower up form the repair shop, Simon got a bit enthusiastic one day and pulled the start cord right out.
This afternoon we have what will hopefully be the final visit to the solicitor with Simon.
The hospital visit went well yesterday, but the specialist wants to see John on Thursday. A bit soon for my liking, but John thinks it is just so the appointments can be re-scheduled over Christmas. Fingers crossed that is all it is. I can't go with him on Thursday as he wants to do some Christmas shopping on his own...yay!!
Now off to do the dreaded housework. At least it is cool for ironing.

What a way to start the day!!

With a spider bite!!!
I should know better, the hot weather does bring the spiders inside, but did one have to be hiding in my towel?
Oh well, at least I am going to the hospital with John this morning, not that I am expecting any dramas, but a good place to be just in case LOL.
On a good note...it has cooled down. Hooray!!!

We're melting!!

Boy oh boy it is HOT!!! We have sweltered through the week, the past 2 days and nights being the worst. Friday and Saturday it reached 41 Celsius, which John tells me is about 105 F. It only went down 10 degrees overnight.
It is about this time every year when we lay in our hot bedroom that we say we really need to aircondition the whole house...not just the living area.
A decent sleep would make us all less grouchy.
Too late this summer already for airconditioning, but we will need to look at it come winter when prices are lower. We just need to remember in winter how hot we are in summer LOL.
The boys have finished school for the year. Next Friday we just have to go and return their text books and collect their report cards.
Simon has 2 Christmas parties to go to, so we get to play taxi. His band is playing at the second party, so that should be a fun experience for him and his friends.
It doesn't feel too Christmassy while we are sweltering and everything is so dry...we are in the midst of a drought too and on water restrictions, which are going to get even more restrictive on January 1st. So we will roast and watch the garden and lawns dry up and die, hoping for rain in winter.

Another day...

...and another visit to a doctor. I have to agree with Kathy, we seem to be keeping the doctors in business here LOL.
Shane's kidney specialist is quite pleased with him, doesn't expect to see any problems developing until Shane is in his 30's or 40's, but will review him annually until he is 18, then refer him over to John's specialist. We'll be able to do group bookings. The other 3 boys need another ultrasound of their kidneys in 12 months too, just to keep an eye on them in case they develop the same disease.
John is feeling better every day which is the best news. We will see his specialist again on Monday...one of our regular 'dates' LOL, most of our alone time is in hospital waiting rooms lately.

We are in for more heat all weekend, yuck!!

Tuesday, December 05, 2006

Boy it is HOT

Thank goodness for airconditioning!! It is really hot here today.
I was out early dropping the boys at school, Simon had his piano lesson before school and Shane only had to be at school until 9.15am. Part of their assessment in Year 9 is a Round Table Assessment, which means standing in front of a panel of 3 adults, one teacher, one community member and one parent (me) and giving an oral presentation. First the panel members get a letter of introduction from the student to read and then listen to the oral presentation for 2 subjects. Shane did his presentation on English and Science, he did quite well, and managed to speak for the full 15 minutes. I had to try not to laugh when he dropped his cue cards and with a big flourish said "Well, there they go."
We were home by 10am and then I spent almost 2 hours on the phone, first to my mum and then to my mother in law.
John is feeling really good today and has gone to Adelaide Oval to watch Australian versus England in the cricket, the last day of the test match here in Adelaide. He must have found a seat in the shade or he would be home by now.
I did have to venture out in the heat to pick Simon up from school, but it is too far for him to walk home LOL.
Tomorrow off to the Children's Hospital with Shane for his annual kidney check up with his specialist. Thursday off to Simon's orthopaedic specialist and Friday is my ultrasound on this foot.
Now I am going to sit in the airconditioning and try and do some stitching.

Monday in SA

After a stressful weekend....I even missed chatting with my friends :( .... today things are looking brighter.
The weekend was lots of pain, for John around the new kidney site and for me with this stupid ankle and the knee joining in.
But, John went to see his specialist again today and had more bloodwork, things are looking up and he doesn't have to go back for a week!!!
The boys finish school on Friday. Officially school finishes on the 15th, but Simon is allowed to leave a week early as he has a part time job and Shane can leave early for family reasons if we choose, so we did. The official last week is just time wasting short courses...cooking, writing, gaming etc. Boring. So we get a week extra family bonding time LOL.
Busy with appointments every day this week, but what's new?
